Former Linn County school resource officer arrested in child sex-abuse case

A former Linn County school resource officer was in custody Friday after being arrested in Iowa on charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a minor and sexual exploitation of a child, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said.

The KBI said the agency’s investigation led to the arrest of David Huggins, 45, of La Cygne.

Huggins, a former deputy in the Linn County Sheriff’s Department, was taken into custody Thursday in Decorah, Iowa, with assistance from Winneshiek County officers.

In October, Linn County Sheriff Paul Filla asked the KBI to handle a case initiated from information forwarded to law enforcement by Travis Laver, superintendent of the Pleasanton school district. Huggins had been a school resource officer in the district.

Huggins was removed Oct. 20 from his duties in the district and placed on administrative leave Nov. 29.

He was fired by the department Wednesday, the KBI said in a statement.
