Washburn tennis players Alejandro Valarezo and Blake Hunter are headed to the ITA Oracle Cup.

Valarezo won the singles title in the ITA Central Regional Championships and then teamed with Hunter to take the doubles title on Sunday in Springfield, Mo.

It was the first time in school history Washburn has swept both the ITA regional singles and doubles titles.

Valarezo started the day with a 6-4, 7-5 semifinal win against over Andrei Mason of Lindenwood. He faced Southwest Baptist’s Sherif Abohabaga in the finals, winning the first set 6-4 and then went 6-6 with Abohabaga in the second set before pulling out the tiebreaker, 16-14.

Valarezo became the second Ichabod to win an ITA regional singles title and the first since Ryan Ward in 2009.

In the doubles final, Hunter and Valarezo faced Youssef Sherif and Jorge Serrano of Northwest Missouri State. Hunter and Valarezo took the first set 6-3 and dropped the second set 6-3 before claiming the tiebreaker, 10-7.

It was the first ITA regional doubles championship for WU since Santiago Giraldo and Jesse Sherer won in 1996.

The Oracle Cup, which will decide the NCAA Division II singles and doubles national champions, will be Oct. 11-15 in Rome, Georgia.
