WU sports briefs: Valarezo, Hunter still playing at ITA Central Regional Tournament

Alejandro Valarezo advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Central Regional Tournament in Springfield, Mo., and Valarezo and Blake Hunter will play in the doubles finals on Sunday.

 

Valarezo advanced to the semifinals of the singles bracket by defeating two opponents in the third round and quarterfinals on Saturday.

WU’s Bradley Eidenmueller, Paul Haase and Hunter reached the round of 16 in singles before falling.

Hunter and Valarezo will take a 12-match doubles winning streak into the finals on Sunday against Northwest Missouri’s Youssef Sherif and Jorge Serrano.

On the women’s side, WU’s Logan Morrissey and Alexis Czapinski each won their won first singles matches before losing in the round of 16. The duo of Czapinski and Morrissey reached the quarterfinals in doubles.

KLEMZ HAS STRONG SHOWING AT RIM ROCK CLASSIC: Washburn cross country runner Jacob Klemz finished first among collegiate runners in the Rim Rock Classic on Saturday in Lawrence.

Klemz placed second overall in the 8-kilometer race in 24:50.9, finishing behind only Zach Zarda, an unattached runner who the event in 24:20.7.

Josh Reed and Chryspus Muema also earned top 25 finishes, with Reed placing 20th and Muema 25th. The Ichabod men placed fourth as a team, besting all non-Division I programs.

The WU women placed fifth as a team and were led by a seventh-place finish by Sierra Mortensen, who set a school record in the women’s 6K with a time of 22:16.6.

WU VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FIVE SETS TO LINDENWOOD: The Washburn volleyball team fell to Lindenwood in five sets on Saturday in Lee Arena, dropping a 25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12 decision.

Erica Montgomery paced Washburn (11-6, 2-3 MIAA) with a career-best 22 kills while hitting .321. Genna Berg finished with 17 kills and Allison Maxwell added 10.
