WU sports roundup: Tennis teams open strong in Wheatstate Classic, volleyball posts two wins in Rolla

The Washburn women’s tennis team swept singles play in the Wheatstate Fall Classic on Saturday at Kossover Tennis Center.


The Ichabods had co-champions in all three singles flights — Alexis Czapinski and Logan Morrissey in the A flight, Jaqueline Engelbrecht and Madison Lysaught in the B flight and Ally Burr and McKenna Gonzales in C.

Czapinski and Morrissey claimed the doubles A flight, beating Baker’s Kate Taylor-Doran and Sophie Robertson in the finals.

WU MEN’S TENNIS SWEEPS DOUBLES TITLES IN WHEATSTATE FALL CLASSIC: The Washburn men’s tennis team claimed three double titles and a singles championship in the Wheatstate Fall Classic on Saturday at Kossover Tennis Center.

Washburn’s All-American doubles team of Alejandro Valarezo and Blake Hunter won the A flight, cruising to 8-3, 8-2 and 8-2 wins over Benedictine, Rockhurst and William Woods. Tommy Hunter and Raul-Alin Dicu won the B flight and Chase Brill and Paul Haase took the C title.

Chase Brill won the C flight in singles, beating Lindenwood’s Antoine Barraud in the finals.

WASHBURN VOLLEYBALL TAKES TWO: The Washburn volleyball team wrapped up the Missouri S&T Middle of Everywhere Classic with a pair of wins on Saturday in Rolla, Mo., finishing the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Washburn (6-2) beat Ohio Dominican 3-1 (25-15, 25-15, 25-27, 25-20) and swept Ashland 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-11). Makayla Maxwell and Genna Berg had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, against Ohio Dominican. Erica Montgomery had 10 kills against Ashland and Berg and Maxwell each had nine.
