Washburn junior place-kicker Perry Schmiedeler is one of 36 players on the watch list for the Fred Mitchell Award.

The award, which is open to any non-NCAA Division I football place-kicker, recognizes players for “their excellence both on and off the field with community service activities.”

Schmiedeler, a Washburn Rural product who also punts for Washburn, ranks sixth on WU’s career chart for made field goals, connecting on 20 of 28 attempts.

Schmiedeler hit 19 of 24 field goals last season, including a career-long 50-yarder, tying WU’s single season record for field goals. A second-team All-MIAA selection, Schmiedeler also converted 35 of 36 extra points.

He was the only player from the MIAA on the watch list.
