Ahead of its first season under head coach Davy Phillips, the Washburn soccer team was picked eighth in the MIAA preseason coaches poll released Thursday.

Washburn went 9-9-1 overall and 5-6 in conference play last year, finishing eighth in the MIAA standings.

Central Missouri topped the poll, followed by Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State, Fort Hays State and Lindenwood to round out the top five. Emporia State, which went 8-9-2 overall and 6-5 in the MIAA last year, was tabbed seventh in the poll.

Phillips was hired by Washburn last month after compiling a 44-16-6 in three seasons as head coach of Baker’s women’s team.

WU will feature 10 newcomers, but the Ichabods return three All-MIAA performers — forward Emily Stauffer, goalkeeper Kaitlin Minnich and midfielder Morgan El-Attrache.

Washburn will play an exhibition on Aug. 25 at Missouri S&T in Rolla before opening the regular season at home against Upper Iowa on Aug. 31. The team will report for practice on Monday.
