Lawrence, Milford to host Eagle Day events in January

Staff members at Milford Nature Center and Clinton State Park will help birdwatchers spot bald eagles and other birds of prey during their respective Eagle Day events.

 

Both free events will take place Jan. 20, 2018, with Clinton hosting its 22nd annual Kaw Valley Eagles Day event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Drive in Lawrence, and Milford’s event beginning at 9 a.m. at the nature center.

In Lawrence, presentations will run from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. on Kansas’ nesting eagles. The presentations will include live raptor demonstrations, and there will be activities available for children of all ages. There will be free bus rides to Clinton State Park at 10:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. for eagle viewing, according to a news release from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

Milford Nature Center will feature a series of educational programs at the Milford Nature Center:

— “Raptors” at 9:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.

— “Owls” at 10 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

— “Nesting Eagles In Kansas” at 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m.

— “Birds Of Prey” at 3:15 p.m.

Live eagle programs will be 10 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the Starbird Classroom, and the Kids’ Tent will have activities and crafts for kids, according to the release.

Free bus tours to view wild eagles in the area will leave the nature center every half-hour, beginning at 9 a.m., with the last bus leaving at 2 p.m. Entrance to Milford State Park is also free on Jan. 14, so daily vehicle permits are not required.
