CITY: LARRY WHITE, TOPEKA HIGH | BASKETBALL SENIOR
HIS PERFORMANCE: White, a 6-foot-4 senior, scored 50 points and grabbed 17 rebounds on the week as Topeka High posted road wins at Hayden and Highland Park to improve to 5-3 on the season. White had 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 64-63 Centennial League win over Hayden last Tuesday, scoring the game-winning basket with three seconds left. White followed that performance with a 26-point, seven-rebound effort in a 70-56 win over Highland Park on Friday, scoring 21 points in the second half. White was a third-team All-City pick last season at Highland Park before transferring to High.
COACH’S COMMENT: “He’s really taken over sort of a leadership responsibility,” Topeka High coach Pat Denney said of White. “He’s really blossoming. Everything that he does is kind of new to me, too, and we just keep progressing week-in and week-out with what he shows us in games.”
TIME 2 TALK
1 QUESTION: You’re coming off a big week, scoring 50 points in wins over city rivals Hayden and Highland Park. Do you feel like you keep improving as you get used to your new teammates and a new system at Topeka High?
ANSWER: I feel like I’ve improved a lot. The teammates that I have, they have confidence in me no matter what I do, whether I’m off, whether I’m on. They always want to see me play the best game I can. I feel like that helps me out and makes me want to go to the next level and go even harder.
2 QUESTION: You spent three years at Highland Park and still have a lot of friends there. Where you really looking forward to going back there and playing last Friday or really nervous?
ANSWER: It was like a homecoming really, but I was nervous at the same time. Going back into that environment it was a lot of pressure on my shoulders. What was I going to do, how was I going to play against the old school? I had to play like I play and continue to do what I have to do.
