JUNCTION CITY — Washburn Rural’s girls basketball team continues to pile up victories while Junior Blues coach Kevin Bordewick continues to pile up milestones.

Rural notched its fifth straight victory Tuesday night, a 60-32 Centennial League decision at Junction City, while Bordewick registered his 1,000th win as a head coach.

Bordewick has posted 830 wins in volleyball and has coached Rural to seven Class 6A state championships, and he now has 170 victories in basketball with coaching stints at Randolph-Blue Valley, Oskaloosa and Washburn Rural. Bordewick is in his ninth season as the Junior Blues’ head basketball coach after serving as an assistant for current Oklahoma State associate head coach Bill Annan and being part of three 6A state championship teams.

“It just means I’m old,” Bordewick said of reaching the 1,000-win mark. “I have been obviously blessed with great athletes who are also great kids who have an outstanding work ethic. Other than that, that number means nothing to me.

“We’re just worried about the next game. That number is nothing in my book. I’m just looking at this season, the very next game and, quite frankly, the very next practice and trying to get better. The number is a credit to just the girls; it’s not me at all.”

Kendall Michalski and Carly Bachelor were the girls who played the biggest role Tuesday in delivering Bordewick’s milestone. Michalski buried five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points, and Bachelor backed her with 18 points.

Rural (5-1, 4-0 Centennial League) led just 8-6 after the first quarter but pushed the advantage to 24-15 by intermission and blitzed Junction City 22-10 in the third quarter. Michalski scored eight of her points in the third, including a pair of treys.

RURAL BOYS 53, JUNCTION CITY 48 (OT) — Washburn Rural eked out a win at Junction City by going 8-for-9 from the free-throw line in overtime. Armahn Dowing hit five of six foul shots in the extra session to help lift Rural and finish with 12 points.

Raymond Swopes scored 19 points, with four of his seven field goals coming from behind the 3-point arc, to lead Rural (4-3, 3-1). Jordan White added 10.

Junction City (3-5, 0-4) got 16 points from AJ Dickerson.
