Washburn Rural’s soccer team still has other goals it wants to accomplish this season, but the Junior Blues notched a big one in Thursday night’s 4-0 Centennial League win over Seaman at McElroy Field.
With the victory, Washburn Rural improved to 8-0 in the league, clinching a share of the league championship for the 23rd straight season.
Senior Matt Wolfe had two goals and an assist to lead the Junior Blues while junior Finn Arnold and sophomore Hayden Beck also added goals and senior Zac Chandler and Arnold were credited with assists as Rural improved to 11-3 overall. Senior Collin Freking notched the shutout in goal for the Junior Blues.
With a win or a tie Tuesday night against Topeka High at Hummer Sports Park, the Junior Blues will claim the Centennial title outright.
“It’s such a good tradition and all the older guys coming back and watching us, we have to keep it going,” Wolfe said of the title streak. “It feels good to get part of it.”
Rural coach Brian Hensyel agreed.
“I won’t lie about it, the streak is a huge deal to us every single year,” Hensyel said. “We make a big deal of it and we make a big deal of it all summer. We want to keep it going because it’s an amazing streak but it’s more about we want to prove we’re the best team in the league every single year.”
Seaman shared the league title with Rural in ‘16 and Wolfe admitted that it felt good to clinch the title share against the Vikings.
“We had a little bit of a grudge with them because they tied with us last year and we couldn’t have that happen again,” he said. “It gave us good energy to come out and get a win.”
Seaman (9-6) kept Washburn Rural off the scoreboard for much of the first half before Wolfe scored the only goal the Junior Blues would need with 11:07 left in the half. Arnold added a second goal 1:24 later to put Rural in command and the Vikings were unable to mount many scoring threats against Freking and the Junior Blues’ defense.
Wolfe added his second goal early in the second half (33:04) and Beck ended the scoring with 15:13 remaining.
