Penalty kick spurs Topeka High in 3-1 soccer win over Topeka West

Topeka West’s soccer team was in a great position against rival Topeka High after Charger senior Jared Freed scored with just six seconds left in the first half to put West up 1-0 in Tuesday’s game at Hummer Sports Park.

But everything changed 1:42 into the second half as Topeka High gained momentum with a successful penalty kick and went on to claim a 3-1 victory at Hummer Sports Park.

The biggest play of the game came at the 38:18 mark of the second half when the Chargers were called for a foul in the box to give Topeka High a penalty kick opportunity, which senior Joel Gonzalez Jr. converted to tie the game at 1-1.

The foul was compounded by the fact that it resulted in a red card on a West player (two yellow cards in the game) and the Chargers had to play a man down the rest of the way. Topeka High, which snapped a three-game losing streak, went on to add two more second-half goals against the short-handed Chargers to take control.

“That was obviously a big break but you have to take advantage of it and I thought the boys did a good job of that,” said Topeka High coach Derek Snook, whose team improved to 2-4 on the year.

Topeka West (1-4-1) continued to battle the Trojans the rest of the way, but High senior Drew Mahan scored to put High ahead to stay with 31:20 left and senior Jose Lopez-Medina added an insurance goal with 13:57 remaining. Lopez-Medina was also credited with an assist on Mahan’s goal.

“We had 18 shots on goal and when you can’t get one in it starts getting frustrating, but once you get a goal or two in the back of the net it seems to be contagious,” Snook said.

Topeka West coach Josh Kutter was pleased with his team’s effort but admitted that the red card was huge.

“That’s how sports go, that’s how soccer is,” Kutter said. “One moment and it all changes. We played hard the entire game, up until the end, and we had our opportunities playing a man down and it’s all about finishing.”
