CLASS 6A

Team … record

Notes — Suffering two key injuries in its season opener against Eisenhower, Derby wasn’t at full strength for its showdown with 5A No. 2 Goddard. It may not have matter as the Lions ran roughshod from start to finish in a 50-20 blowout — Derby’s first double-digit loss since a 34-14 loss to Wichita Heights in the 2011 playoffs.

CLASS 5A

Team … record

1. Aquinas (1) … 2-0

2. Goddard (2) … 2-0

Notes — In both big matchups between ranked 5A and 6A teams, Class 5A prevailed in a big way. Blake Sullivan accounted for six TDs and more than 400 yards and Goddard manhandled No. 1 Derby 50-20. Meanwhile, No. 1 Aquinas only outgained No. 3 Blue Valley North by four yards, but used a 14-point edge in the third quarter to take a 28-14 win.

CLASS 4A DIVISION I

Team … record

1. Miege (1) … 2-0

2. Maize South (4) … 2-0

3. DeSoto (5) … 2-0

Notes — Maize South has always had a strong defense under Brent Pfeifer and 2017 doesn’t appear to be any different. The Mavericks posted their second straight shutout, this one a 9-0 blanking of No. 2 McPherson which was coming off a big victory over Buhler in the opener. The Mavericks held McPherson to just 191 yards and won despite managing only 176 yards.

CLASS 4A DIVISION II

Team … record

1. Wichita Collegiate (1) … 2-0

2. Hayden (2) … 1-1

Notes — Down 14-0 to GWAC rival Holcomb, Scott City came roaring back for a 23-14 win, scoring 17 second-quarter points to erase the early deficit. No. 1 Collegiate, meanwhile, handed Hoisington its first regular-season loss since the 2014 opener with a 35-20 win over the Cardinals.

Team … record

1. Nemaha Central (1) … 2-0

2. Phillipsburg (2) … 2-0

3. Silver Lake (3) … 2-0

4. Conway Springs (4) … 2-0

5. Marysville (5) … 2-0

Notes — In a No. 2 vs. No. 1 Mid-Continent League battle, 3A Phillipsburg shut out 2-1A No. 1 Smith Center 23-0. An 88-yard kickoff return by John Gower to start the second half sparked the win. Meanwhile, Norton sent a statement to both league rivals with a 40-10 romp past Plainville.

CLASS 2-1A

Team … record

1. Smith Center (1) … 1-1

2. Lyndon (3) … 2-0

3. Jefferson North (4) … 2-0

4. Ell-Saline (5) … 2-0

5. Valley Heights (NR) … 2-0

Others — Colgan 1-1, Elkhart 2-0, Jackson Heights 2-0, Olpe 1-1, Plainville 0-2 Sedgwick 1-1, Troy 1-1.

Notes — Elkhart very well may be taking its place among the best in the west in 2-1A, behind standout quarterback Lane Whisennand, who had 217 yards and three touchdowns rushing and threw for 77 yards and a score against SW Heights. In two games, he’s halfway to a 1,000-yard season on the ground and has accounted for eight touchdowns.

EIGHT-MAN DIVISION I

Team … record

1. Burlingame (1) … 2-0

2. Osborne (2) … 2-0

3. St. Francis (3) … 2-0

4. Spearville (4) … 2-0

5. Hoxle (5) … 2-0

Others — Argonia-Attica 1-1, Atwood 2-0, Central Plains 1-1, Clifton-Clyde 2-0, Logan-Palco 2-0, Sedan 2-0, Solomon 2-0, South Central 2-0, South Gray 2-0, St. Paul 2-0, Victoria 2-0, West Elk 2-0.

Notes — Spearville had its hands full with Division II No. 3 Hodgeman County for a half before racing past the Longhorns in a big 64-34 road victory. Atwood, meanwhile, destroyed perennial power Sharon Springs 46-0 to make its own statement that the west will be tough sledding again this year.

EIGHT-MAN DIVISION II

Team … record

1. Hanover (1) … 2-0

2. Pike Valley (2) … 2-0

3. Otis-Bison (4) … 2-0

4. South Barber (5) … 2-0

5. Dighton (NR) … 2-0

Others — Beloit St.-John’s 1-1, Caldwell 2-0, Hodgeman County 1-1, Hutch Central Christian 2-0, Rock Hills 2-0, Sylvan-Lucas 2-0, Wakefield 2-0, Wetmore 2-0.

Notes — No. 4 Otis-Bison scored 56 points … in the first quarter alone in a 56-0 rout of Ellinwood. Wetmore proved its win in the opener with Valley Falls — the program’s first since 1986 — was no fluke as the Cardinals flew past Onaga 62-36 as Joel Hutfles had a hand in six touchdowns and 13 tackles.
