Cold-shooting KU women fall at St. John’s in overtime

NEW YORK — In a game that featured 11 ties or lead changes during regulation, the St. John’s women finally found a decisive answer against Kansas.

In overtime.

The Red Storm opened the extra period with a 7-0 run and went on to claim a 65-53 victory Monday night at Carnesecca Arena. The loss was only the second of the year for the Jayhawks in their first true road game of the season.

Despite a frigid shooting performance, KU led 51-49 with 28 seconds to play when Christalah Lyons hit one of two free throws, but Maya Singleton’s layup seven seconds later extended the game.

KU committed a turnover on its first overtime possession, and the Red Storm (7-3) took charge for good when Akina Wellere hit a pair of foul shots at the 4:16 mark and Alisha Kebbe followed with a 3-pointer less than a half-minute later.

The only points KU managed in OT came on a pair of free throws from Kylee Kopatich with 1:44 to play. The Jayhawks were hampered all night by woeful shooting, as they finished hitting only 29.8 percent from the field (17-57) and 20 percent from 3-point range (3-15).

Wellere scored 18 points to lead four St. John’s players in double figures. Singleton added 14 points and a whopping 24 rebounds for the Red Storm, while Kebbe finished with 11 points and Qadashah Hoppie 10.

St. John’s wasn’t much better from the field than KU, connecting on only 30. 4 percent of its attempts, but the Red Storm benefited from 10-of-26 shooting from behind the 3-point arc. Wellere and Kebbe each hit three treys.

Brianna Osorio led the Jayhawks (8-2) with 14 points. Lyons pitched in 12.
