K-State women lose one-point heartbreaker to Northern Iowa

Wildcats’ Kayla Goth leads all scorers with 26 but misses pair of free throws in final second

MANHATTAN — Kayla Goth played a starring role for Kansas State for much of Thursday night, hitting 9 of 13 field goals and 5 of 8 free throws, but her final two misfires proved costly.

Goth missed a pair of free throws with just one second remaining as the Wildcats dropped a 72-71 decision to Northern Iowa at Bramlage Coliseum in their final nonconference game.

Goth, a junior guard, hit her third and final 3-pointer — the last of her game-high 26 points — with seven seconds remaining to pull K-State to within 72-71. The Wildcats (8-3) then forced a Kennedy Kirkpatrick turnover, and Northern Iowa’s Mikaela Morgan followed by fouling Goth just before the buzzer to set up the painful misses.

Before that game-ending sequence, Kirkpatrick and Morgan were brilliant for Northern Iowa. The two came off the bench and combined for 42 points and 13 3-pointers. Kirkpatrick made 7 of 10 treys in a 24-point outing while Morgan was 6 for 9 from behind the arc for 18 points.

Ellie Howell added 11 points for the Panthers (4-7) and hit what proved to be the game-winning free throw with 10 seconds to play.

Goth also contributed a team-high five assists for K-State. Topekan Peyton Williams backed Goth with 21 points and six rebounds, but no other Wildcat managed more than eight points.

K-State will open Big 12 play at 7 p.m. Dec. 28 when it plays host to No. 6 Baylor (10-1).
