The priority for Kansas State among its two available basketball scholarships is an experienced big man, but coach Bruce Weber also was looking for another wing player if available.
That spot is now filled with Amaad Wainright, a 6-foot-4 guard from Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College, committing to the Wildcats on Thursday.
Wainright is a Kansas City, Mo., native and the brother of former Baylor player Ishmail Wainright.
“Just growing up around the program and being close to home, I knew a lot about K-State,” Wainright said in a telephone interview. “It was always my dream school.”
Ishmail Wainright, a senior this past season at Baylor, gave his brother a strong review of K-State.
“He said he loved the atmosphere when he played against them up there,” Amaad said.
Wainright averaged 14.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists this past season to help Trinity Valley to a 24-7 record. He shot 46 percent from the field and 36 percent on 3-pointers, scoring 45 points in one game.
“I’m an all-around scorer,” he said. “I can shoot and I can drive the rim and hit the mid-range shot. I don’t want to sound cocky but I can score in a lot of ways.
“I just want to help the team win. I’m a combo one-two guard and I can play out on the wing. I feel like I can make an impact in so many ways as far as play-making, scoring, making assists, rebounding and just getting everybody involved.”
Wainright, who has two years of eligibility, signed with North Texas last fall but received his release after a coaching change. After re-opening recruitment he chose K-State over LSU, Illinois, Boise State and Murray State, he said.
K-State is in the running for Isaac Kante, a 6-8 power forward from Putnam, Conn., who is expected to announce his decision May 2. His final list also includes Georgetown, St. Bonaventure, Old Dominion, Georgia and St. John’s.
The Wildcats also are involved with Kyle McKinney, a 6-10 center at Northeast (Neb.) Community College; Toby Van Ry, a 6-10 power forward at Northwest Kansas Tech in Goodland and Marek Nelson, a 6-7 forward at Wichita Sunrise Christian Academy.
During the early period K-State signed forwards Levi Stockard and Nigel Shadd and guard Mike McGuirl.
