Gooldy, Harrison pace bowlers with top-10-ranked series

Women preparing for organization’s 79th city tournament

Rachel Gooldy claimed her second top-10 ranking this season, while Steve Harrison earned his first to share the city bowling spotlight last week.

Gooldy, who already ranked second with a 735 series, shot 237-255-237 – 729 a week ago Tuesday in the Lenahan League at West Ridge Lanes to move into fourth place on the season honor roll.

Harrison, meanwhile, made a run at the coveted 800 mark with a 267-280-245 – 792 series last Thursday in the JPJ & Associates League at Gage Bowl to grab sixth place on the men’s leaderboard.

Joining them on the honor roll were Troy Bell, who shot 300-248-200 – 748 in the Lenahan League (the 16th men’s 300 this season), and Ty Overstreet, who tied for fifth on the women’s list with a 278 game in the 6 p.m. Sunday Mixer League at West Ridge.

Gerry Sanders paced the senior men and claimed the No. 3 spot on the honor roll with a 225-266-226 – 717 series at West Ridge, while Pearl Colby led the women and grabbed sixth place with a 190-225-187 – 602 series at the same center.

Archie Allen just missed the senior men’s top 10 with a 269 game (tied for 12th) at West Ridge, while Barb Tidwell matched Colby with a 225 game (tied for 13th) at Gage.

The youth, many of whom are focused on the upcoming high school bowling season, were led by Clayton Mumford’s 236-233-220 – 689 series and Lauren Buchanan’s 225 – 587, both at West Ridge.

  • The 79th Topeka USBC Women’s Bowling Association City Championship Tournament is scheduled for Jan. 21-22 and 28-29 at West Ridge Lanes, with a Jan. 18 entry deadline. Entry forms are available at local centers.

Officials are urging past participants to enter (or attend the opening ceremonies at noon on Jan. 21) what is expected to be the final TUSBCWBA-sponsored tournament before the city’s women’s and men’s associations consolidate into one organization.

The entry fee is $18 per event, which include four-person team, doubles, singles and handicap and/or scratch all-events. Entrants can bowl only the team event if desired. Those in need of partners can call Shirley Jacobson at 213-1504.
