TGA shakes up 2017 summer schedule

Stroke Play shortened to three days, moved to July; Match Play switched to early June

In releasing its 2017 summer schedule, the Topeka Golf Association has shaken things up in hopes of rejuvenating its four “majors.”

The City Stroke Play, traditionally held across two weekends in mid-June, will now be a three-day event in July. The first round will be held July 14 at Shawnee Country Club with the second to be played July 15 at Cypress Ridge Golf Course and the final round contested July 16 at Topeka Country Club.

With the Stroke Play moved to July, the Match Play has been shifted to early June. The qualifying round will be held June 3 and the Match Play followed June 8-11, all at Shawnee Country Club.

In addition the City Two-Man and Four-Man championship have also flip-flopped on the schedule. The Two-Man Best Ball/Scramble will be held May 6-7 at Cypress Ridge, while the Four-Man Shamble/Best Ball will be held July 29-30 at Lake Shawnee Golf Course.

The TGA schedule begins with the Four-Person Benefit Scramble for the Washburn golf team, held April 7 at Shawnee County Club. Deadline is March 30 with a cost of $240 per team, which includes lunch.

The City Champions tournaments will be held in May and August with the Two-Man Scramble (50-over) to be held May 15-16 at Firekeeper Golf Course and the Stroke Play (45-over) to be held Aug. 28-29 at Topeka Country Club. The Thrivent Financial City Junior Championship will be held July 24-25 at Cypress Ridge and Lake Shawnee, respectively.

Entry forms and additional information for all city events can be found at www.topekagolf.org or at any of the city golf course proshops.

— The Cypress Ridge Ladies League will hold a get-acquainted coffee at 9:30 a.m. March 28 at Cypress Ridge Golf Course. Guests and current members are invited. For more information, call JoAnn Roten 273-9776.
