Topeka High product Alec Beatty, a sophomore wide receiver at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., was named second-team All-Midwest Conference after catching 42 passes and scoring nine touchdowns for the 7-3 Scots.
ROADRUNNERS FALL TO WILDCATS: The Topeka RoadRunners fell 2-1 to the Wichita Falls Wildcats on Thursday in Wichita Falls, Texas. Topeka gave up a goal in each of the first two periods. Trailing 2-0 entering the third, the RoadRunners attempted a comeback with a Marshall Bowery goal, but ultimately fell short. Wichita Falls’ Ricky Carballo scored both goals for the Wildcats.
WU SOFTBALL ANNOUNCES SIX SIGNEES: First-year Washburn softball coach Brenda Holaday announced Thursday six signees for the 2018 season. The list consists of four high school and two junior college players.
Local additions include pitcher Megan Deiter, a former three-time state champion at Silver Lake who is currently a sophomore at Johnson County Community College, and Taylor Kirk, a Rossville product and sophomore utility player at Johnson County.
Other signees are Olathe Northwest’s Halle England (utility/catcher), Olathe South’s Lenae Salinas (utility/catcher), Lawrence Free State’s Dacia Starr (first baseman/designated player) and Lathrop’s (Mo.) Maddy Mann (first base/third base).
“We are very excited about this group of players,” Holaday said. “They are proven winners, versatile athletes, strong students and incredible young ladies.”
