Local sports briefs: Emporia State topples Sterling

EMPORIA STATE TOPPLES STERLING: The Emporia State men’s basketball team matched a season-high 13 made 3-pointers en route to an 85-54 win over Sterling on New Year’s Eve.


Jevon Taylor went 6 of 8 from behind the arc to tally a game-high 18 points. Tyler Jordan and Jay Temaat also scored in double figures, with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The Hornets will resume MIAA action at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Lincoln.

ROADRUNNERS TO HOST STAR WARS NIGHT: The Force will be with the Topeka RoadRunners on Saturday as they take on the Wenatchee Wild.

The team is hosting a Star Wars Night, with both teams wearing special jerseys based on the popular science-fiction movie series — Wenatchee will wear Stormtrooper-style jerseys, while the RoadRunners will wear Jedi Master jerseys. The Jedi jerseys will be auctioned off after the game.
