RoadRunners fall in opener

BLAINE, Minn. -- The Fresno Monsters got the best of the Topeka RoadRunners 4-2 Wednesday night at the North American Hockey League Showcase tournament in Blaine, Minn.

It was the RoadRunners’ first regular season game of the season.

Fresno’s first three goals came off power plays, and the fourth goal came on an empty net in the game’s final minute. Jeffrey McMinimy led the way for the Monsters, scoring both of their goals in the third period.

Fresno’s Jeffrey Pauluk opened the scoring with a goal at the 2:02 mark of the first period.

Andrew O’Leary’s goal at the 4:45 mark of the first period tied the game at 1 for Topeka. The RoadRunners’ Brian Christie assisted on the goal.

The Monsters regained the lead at the 18:16 mark of the second period when Branden Bradley scored on an assist from Zack Wallace and McMinimy.

Topeka tied the game again at the 4:04 mark of the third period off a goal from Dan Dupell that was assited by Ryan White and Chris Bond.

The RoadRunners will play again in the Showcase at 1:15 p.m. Thursday against Port Huron.
