West Ridge Lanes hosts opening round of doubles tourney Sunday

20-team event moves to Lawrence for additional qualifying and finals

A 10-time winner on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour, an upcoming star at Wichita State and a host of United States Bowling Congress champions headline the field for the Red, White & Blue Challenge on Sunday at West Ridge Lanes in Topeka and Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence.

The field of 40 bowlers (20 two-man teams) includes Bryan Goebel, who won 10 titles on the PBA Tour; Kamron Doyle, a WSU freshman and the youngest person ever to cash in a PBA tournament (a regional event in Canton, Ga., at age 12); and current and past USBC champions Brent Bowers, Jay Futrell, Mitch Hupe, Zach Rhoades, Russ Wilson and Justin Zwashka.

The scratch event will use the Baker format, with teammates alternating frames, and will consist of 12 games of qualifying — the first six at West Ridge, beginning at 9:30 a.m., and the second six at Royal Crest, at 1:30 p.m. — with the top 16 teams advancing to single-elimination match play (best two-out-of-three games) at Royal Crest. A different USBC oil pattern (white, blue and red, in order) will be used for each segment.

Teams will be competing for prize money that includes $1,180 to the winners, $930 to second place, $710 each to third and fourth, and $500 each to fifth through eighth. The top qualifier also will get its $150 entry fee back.
