Brandon Benoit improves career-best mark to 803

Uhl moves into senior men's lead with 795 series

Brandon Benoit is climbing the 800 series ladder slowly. Very slowly.

Benoit broke into the 800 ranks with an 801 series in January 2015 in the Lenahan Ultimate Scratch League at West Ridge Lanes, and topped that with an 803 series a week ago Tuesday night in the same league.

“For some reason, I like to pressure myself to barely get an 800,” Benoit said. “I don’t know when I’ll have an 820 or 830 or something, but so far I like to make it interesting coming into the last couple frames.”

Indeed. The 27-year-old Benoit opened with a 247 game, shot 279 in game two and finished with a just-good-enough 277 for 803 to tie Robert Rolin and Russ Wilson for seventh place on the men’s season honor roll.

Benoit, it turns out, was using a new (to him) Storm Crux Pearl bowling ball given to him by his dad, former professional bowler Bob Benoit.

“He had drilled it up and used it one night, and it did not work out well for him at all. It was too reactive for his ball speed and rev rate,” Benoit said. “I hook the ball a lot, but he has more revs and slower speed. I have a lot quicker speed and not so many revs. The ball worked out pretty well for me.”

Benoit, who is averaging 205 in his only league, “flagged” a 7-pin in the fifth frame of game one for an open, spared in the sixth or seventh frame of game two and had one other spare in game three before leaving a 10-pin on his last ball.

“I’d like to get out of the single-digit 800s and add an extra number to that,” he said. “That would be the game plan — to get an 810 or higher.”

Earlier that same day, Dennis Uhl claimed the senior men’s series lead with a 249-278-268 – 795 outing in the Early Birds League at Gage Center Bowl. Uhl, who replaced Gerry Sanders (780) in the top spot, also ranks ninth (732) and 12th (727) this season.

The only other changes in the honor roll’s top 10 were recorded by Phyllis Zentner, who moved into fifth place among senior women with a 246 game at Center, and John Baeten, who grabbed sixth place for youth boys with a 221-219-265-268 – 973 four-game series, also at Center.

Chelsie Bahr paced the women with a 254 – 668 series at West Ridge, Randal Schiffelbein rolled a 298 game at Center and seniors RoxAnn Crowder and Kay Johnson each tossed a 572 series at West Ridge.
