PHOTOS: The Many Hats of Topeka 91-year-old Marge Heeney
Marge Heeney, 91, of Topeka, died Tuesday. Here is a slideshow of photos and a write-up we did with her and her hats from last month.
Marge Heeney never leaves home without a hat.
Heeney, 91, has long been active in the community and is widely known in Topeka as the “Hat Lady.” She estimates she had about 100 of them before she recently began giving some away.
Some have been given to her, and she purchased others. They range from wide-brimmed felt hats with feathers to a glam, metallic, quilted captain’s hat adorned with rhinestones.
Dozens of her favorite chapeaus hang from nails in the walls of her room, while others are stacked in her closet or dangling from a coat rack.
For Heeney, wearing a hat is a matter of simple convenience. Throw on a hat and no one notices what your hair looks like, she said.
