PHOTOS: Fallen Kansas law enforcement honored at Statehouse
Hundreds of people — family, friends, law enforcement officers and state officials — gathered Friday at the Statehouse to memorialize three Kansas law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2016. Here is a gallery from the event, with photos by Celia Llopis-Jepsen/The Capital-Journal.
Detective Brad Lancaster, age 39, died on May 9. The same agency, the Kansas City Kansas Police Department, lost another of its members to violence just two months later when Captain Robert Melton was shot in July. Melton died on July 19 at age 46.
Lancaster and Melton had each suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Two months after that, 44-year-old Master Deputy Brandon Collins, of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, died on Sept. 11. Collins was killed by a truck during a traffic stop.
