“Proud of Topeka”
The recent Rotary Freedom Festival was successful in part due to the excellent cooperation we received from a variety of public officials.
I would particularly like to thank City Manager Doug Gerber, who supported us with every request. The police and fire departments helped keep our runners safe and had personnel at the festival. Jennifer Goodrich in the city clerk’s office shepherded our application through the process. Street department officials helped with street closures and other logistics, and there were so many more who made it easy to work with city regulations.
The state of Kansas made the Capitol grounds available, and the folks in Alcoholic Beverage Control helped us with the temporary beverage license. The Metropolitan Transit Authority provided a bus for festival goers along Kansas Avenue. Thanks go to Susan Duffy and Al Bradley for their cooperation. Councilwoman Karen Hiller and Mayor Larry Wolgast aided with council approval and spoke at the festival. They are great public servants.
And a special thanks to Larry Gawronski, director of the Topeka Performing Arts Center, and Vince Frye, director of Downtown Topeka Inc., who guided us through all the setup issues with producing a festival downtown. We were fortunate with the weather, but TPAC would have been there for us to use in case of rain.
Finally, a huge thank you to our major financial backers: The Topeka Capital-Journal, Anderson Chandler at Fidelity Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank Topeka, Capitol Federal Foundation, Kansas City Power & Light/Westar, the Goodell Stratton Edmonds & Palmer law firm, Topeka Electric Motor, Security Benefit/SE2, Clayton Financial, Stormont-Vail Health, Wolfe’s Camera, and many more individuals and Rotarians who gave and helped.
The cooperation we received made me proud of our city!
