Shawnee County Commission Chairman Bob Archer directed human resources director Angela Lewis on Thursday to keep county employees informed about the withholding of money from their paychecks to reflect income tax rate increases.
“We’re going to have a lot of questions on the tax increases and how we are doing our withholding,” he said.
Commissioners Archer, Kevin Cook and Shelly Buhler voted 3-0 Thursday to acknowledge they’d received a memorandum from Lewis regarding changes in income tax withholding rates for this year and next year. The changes took effect July 1.
The Kansas Legislature increased individual income tax rates retroactively for the tax year 2017, and further increased them for the tax year 2018 and later years, Lewis’ memo said.
She noted that the Kansas Department of Revenue has updated withholding tax tables to reflect the 2018 tax year withholding rates, and posted them on its website at https://ksrevenue.org//forms-btwh.html.
“Shawnee County has opted to apply these rates to the second half of tax year 2017 allowing most employees to ‘catch up’ on their withholding for tax year 2017,” Lewis wrote. “In addition, withholding at the 2018 rate now means it will not be necessary to change the amount of withholding again in just 6 months.”
Commissioners also voted 3-0 Thursday to:
— Advertise the health department director’s opening left vacant when Allison Alejos resigned from that job effective May 19. Linda Ochs has since served as the department’s interim director.
— Solicit bids from anyone interesting in contracting to provide pest control services for all county facilities. The county’s contract with Ozark Pest Control expires at the end of this month.
— Authorize the information technology department to advertise and fill a vacant assistant network administrator’s job at an annual cost in salary and benefits of $57,594.80.
— Enter into a contract through which the county will pay $150 per month to lease an additional 21 square feet to house the backup generator for Shawnee County Emergency Communications Radio Network equipment on the 17th floor of Topeka Tower, 534 S. Kansas Ave.
