SCRANTON — Christmas celebrations are nearly over, but one area church will continue to observe the birth of Jesus this weekend with displays of more than 200 Nativity sets.

St Patrick’s Catholic Church, 302 Boyle St. in the Osage County town of Scranton, will have its third annual Nativity Showcase from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7. The event will take place in conjunction with the Epiphany celebration.

Mary Vawter Burgett, a St. Patrick’s parishioner and president of the church’s Altar Society, said the Nativity Showcase is “a very lovely way to close the Christmas season.”

Burgett said the church will be adorned for the Christmas season with Nativity sets placed by members and friends of the parish. She said Nativity sets on display belong both to Catholics and members of other denominations.

“There will be many different sizes, number of pieces, and varied artistic interpretations of the Nativity,” Burgett said. “This will be the third year for this parish community tradition. The first year, January 2016, there were over 150 sets, over 200 in 2017, and more sets are planned for 2018.”

St Patrick’s church has been part of the Scranton community for more than 150 years. Members are working to raise funds to build a new structure to replace the current 100-year-old building.

Cookies will be served at the Nativity Showcase by the church’s Altar Society. Freewill donations will go to the Building Fund.
