Topeka religion roundup: Oakland church to have community ‘Christmas Eve Eve’ service on Saturday night

A Topeka church will have a community “Christmas Eve Eve” service on Saturday night.

 

The service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at Oakland United Methodist Church, 801 N.E. Chester.

The special guest preacher will be the Rev. James Hardstone, from Kenya, Africa.

A live nativity will be included with the program, which also will feature guest musicians from other churches.

Hot chocolate will be served following the service, which is designed for people who will attend Christmas Eve services at their own churches on Sunday night, Dec. 24.

In other events:

— Local congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will have special Christmas programs on Sunday, Dec. 24.

“The Prince of Peace” is the title of the combined Christmas program of the Colly Creek and Lake Shawnee Wards and the Topeka Spanish Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 10 a.m. in the LDS meetinghouse, 3611 S.W. Jewell. The program about Christ’s birth will feature narration by Reed Davis and Scot Hirschi, congregational singing and special Christmas music by a women’s ensemble with flute, a men’s ensemble with strings and combined adult, youth, children’s and women’s choirs. The women’s choir will sing in both English and Spanish.

The combined Christmas sacrament service and program of the Kaw Valley and Sherwood Wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be at 10 a.m. in the Topeka LDS Stake Center, 2401 S.W. Kingsrow Road.

The program will feature talks about the birth and mission of Jesus Christ by Bishop Zachary Conrad, of the Kaw Valley Ward, and Robert Jordan, a member of the bishopric of the Sherwood Ward. Special Christmas music will include songs by combined adult, youth and children’s choirs and congregational singing.

— First Lutheran Church, 1234 S.W. Fairlawn, will have a New Year’s Eve communion service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 31.

— Calvary Lutheran Church, 4211 N.W. Topeka Blvd., will have a New Year’s Eve Divine Service at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31.

— The Watch Night Service for the Topeka Churches Singing Convention will be held at 10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, 2222 S.E. Madison. The year-end meal will be served at 9 p.m. Elder David Helm, of Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church, will preach.

— The Topeka Churches Singing Convention will sponsor a service at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, 2222 S.E. Madison. Youth and adult Choirs will sing and the message will be delivered by the Rev. Ollie Johnson Jr.

— First United Methodist Church, 600 S.W. Topeka Blvd., will offer Financial Peace University classes at 6 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Jan. 10. Visit www.fpu.com/1055816 for more information or to register.

— Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church, 1029 N. Kansas Ave., will have an Epiphany celebration titled “Oh Holy Night” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan.14, the the church’s fellowship hall. The celebration will begin with the viewing of a display of nativities and a chocolate feast followed by music and poetry and ending with a visit from the Magi.
