Topeka church to present sixth annual Nativities and Noels event

The sixth annual Nativities and Noels event, which features about 700 nativities from around the world along with continuous live vocal and instrumental Christmas music, will run from Friday, Dec. 1, through Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Topeka Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2401 S.W. Kingsrow. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Refreshments will be served throughout the event.

The nativities are on loan from local Latter-day Saints and friends of other faiths and will include various styles, including traditional, ornaments, miniature, homemade, electric, musical, children’s, and international.

About 90 countries will be represented in the display. Creches will range in size from under an inch to several feet tall and will be made of materials such as porcelain, wood, clay, metal, cloth, paper, marbles, corn husks, coconut shells, gourds, recycled pop cans, steel drums and auto parts.

A “seek-and-find” sheet — similar in concept to “Where’s Waldo?” — and a nativity photo booth that features biblical costumes and a stable backdrop will be available for visitors throughout the free event. Christmas videos and a Christmas reading room also will be featured.

Additional Christmas activities are planned on Saturday and Sunday, including nativity crafts for children and a Christmas storyteller. A Christmas music program for people of all ages will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Following the close of Nativities and Noels at 7 p.m. Sunday, a live broadcast of a Christmas devotional from Salt Lake City will be shown. The devotional will feature music by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and a Christmas message from a worldwide leader of the LDS Church.
