Topeka religion roundup: Award-winning hip-hop artist Lacrae to play at Sharefest

A free outdoor concert featuring an award-winning hip-hop artist will take place Saturday night, May 6, near the Statehouse in downtown Topeka, climaxing a day in which 1,500 volunteers will take part in a variety of community service projects as part of the 11th annual Sharefest event.

 

All volunteer slots have been filled for Sharefest, a project in which volunteers from 44 churches and organizations will do landscaping, painting, construction and cleanup at Topeka Public Schools locations, as well as at the Boys and Girls Club of Topeka and the Topeka Rescue Mission.

Lunch will be served for the volunteers after the work concludes.

Additionally, a free concert featuring Dove Award and Grammy Award-winning Christian hip-hop artist Lecrae will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday near S.W. 8th and Van Buren, on the north side of the Statehouse. The concert will be in conjunction with the Tell the World Topeka event.

Appearing with Lecrae will be Trip Lee, another nationally known Christian hip-hop artist.

Organizers are hoping for up to 10,000 people to attend the free concert.

-West Side Baptist Church, 1008 S.W. 4th, will have a pancake and rummage sale on Saturday, May 6. The pancake feed will be from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with a suggested donation of $2.50 per person. The rummage sale will be from 8 a.m. to noon.

-Faith Temple Church, 1162 S.W. Lincoln, will have its 28th annual Winning Women’s Conference at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 6, and 11 a.m. Sunday, May 7. Special guests will include Derrick and Lisa Frank, of Atlanta, and DoJuan Hobson, of Kansas City, Mo. The event theme is “Back to God!”

-Trinity Lutheran Church, 731 S.W. Buchanan, will host Quartermania at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 6. The fundraiser will include an auction and raffle with bids by quarters for products provided by vendors. Concessions will be available. Call (785) 233-0767 for more information.

-The Topeka Churches Singing Convention will take place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 1018 S.E. 8th. Adult choirs will sing on Sunday afternoon, when Elder David Helm will preach.

There will be no service on Saturday, May 6, as previously had been announced.

-Christian-country singer-songwriter Peter Lewis Whitebird will be in concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Highland Park Baptist Church, 820 S.E. 29th.

Whitebird also announced that after 18 years of traveling full-time with his music ministry, he and his wife, Judy, have decided to come off the road.

Whitebird said he will be starting a new church ministry called Grace Life Connection that will begin meeting at 5 p.m. Saturdays starting May 20 at Papan’s Landing, 623 N.W. Paramore in North Topeka.

Whitebird said the ministry’s slogan is “Equipping people to live grace inside-out in an upside-down world.”

He said Grace Life Connection will offer a casual, come-as-you-are worship and Bible study environment that those who are uncomfortable with traditional churches can enjoy.

-The Supportive Adults Inspiring Lives luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church, 7433 S.W. 29th. -The Topeka Women’s Connection “Purse-N-ality” luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 S.W. 10th. The speaker will be Louise Simmons, of Broken Arrow, Okla. The luncheon cost is $14, with paid reservations due by May 5 by calling (785) 554-3617. There is no charge for the program only.

-The Supportive Adults Inspiring Lives group from Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church will have a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13, at 2920 S.W. Tutbury Town Road. Multiple families will be contributing. Proceeds will benefit mission projects.

-The Saturday Women’s Connection will have a “Girls Love to Shop” luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 S.W. 10th.

-The Ugandan Kids Choir will be in concert at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 21, at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 S.E. Michigan.

-The “Summer Lights: Escape the Ordinary” tour will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, July 7, at the Providence Medical Center Amphitheater in Bonner Springs.
