Auburn-Washburn superintendent sends email to parents confirming death of student

A Washburn Rural High School senior has died, the superintendent of Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 confirmed in an email to parents Thursday.

“I am saddened to inform you that there has been a death in the Auburn-Washburn school community,” superintendent Scott McWilliams said in the statement. “We are sorry to inform you that Makyla Whayne, a senior at WRHS, has passed away. Out of respect for the family, no other information is available to share at this time.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family. Counselors and support staff will be available to assist students and staff members who are experiencing difficulty in coping with this loss.”

McWilliams said the Family Service and Guidance Center “is aware of the situation and available for assistance 24 hours a day” at (785) 232-5005.
