Topeka police say they still don’t have positive identification on a person whose body was found in a burning vehicle over the weekend in the city’s Highland Park area.
On Tuesday morning, police Lt. Colleen Stuart said investigators also are awaiting a report from the Shawnee County Coroner’s Office regarding the cause of death.
Police and emergency responders were sent at 1:51 a.m. Saturday to the area of S.E. 15th and Hudson regarding a vehicle fire.
While extinguishing the blaze, firefighters noticed a person inside the vehicle who was found to be deceased.
Until a cause of death has been determined, the incident hasn’t been counted as a homicide for 2017.
