Investigators continue to look into an overnight house fire that caused an estimated $12,000 in damage to a vacant residence on the city’s east side.
Fire crews were called at 11:58 p.m. Wednesday to a residence at 727 S.E. Highland after officials said an alert neighbor noticed flames coming from the house.
Upon their arrival, firefighters found the two-story, wooden-frame home had heavy flames showing.
Crews began a fire attack and a search of the residence, which revealed the home was vacant. The blaze was quickly brought under control and was contained to the home where it started.
The Topeka Fire Department’s investigation unit was called to the scene to determine the origin the case of the blaze.
A preliminary report indicated the fire’s cause was undetermined, pending further investigation.
The fire was determined to have started in the east-side living room of the residence.
The estimated dollar loss was $10,000 to the structure and $2,000 to its contents.
