One person was in jail early Wednesday after he was captured following a short vehicle chase on Tuesday night in central Topeka, police said.

The arrested person was identified as Nicholas Scott Smiley, 36, of Topeka.

The incident began about 10:30 p.m. when offices on patrol noticed a northbound vehicle in the 2700 block of S.W. Burlingame Road that was being driven by a man being sought in connection with an earlier incident, said police Sgt. Steven Block.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver took off instead, initiating a pursuit that continued north on S.W. Washburn Avenue.

The driver abandoned the vehicle in the 2000 block of S.W. Lincoln, about a mile north and east of where the chase began.

Police then set up a perimeter in the area, Block said. A K-9 unit responded to the scene and the person being sought was found a short time later hiding in a garage in the 2000 block of S.W. Buchanan, a block east of where the vehicle had been abandoned.

Smiley was transported to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning, then was booked into the Shawnee County Jail in connection with aggravated assault, domestic battery, criminal restraint, fleeing and eluding, possession of drug paraphernalia and other traffic-related offenses.

His name wasn’t available as of early Wednesday.

No injuries or property damage were reported in connection with the incident.

S.W. Burlingame Road, where the chase began, becomes S.W. Washburn Avenue north of S.W. 27th.
