An early-morning blaze on the city’s west side caused an estimated $20,000 damage to the exterior of a single-story home but resulted in no injuries, authorities said.

The blaze was reported at 4:07 a.m. at a residence at 7316 S.W. 24th.

Topeka Fire Department Battalion Chief Ty Christian said at the scene that the home’s occupants were awakened to the fire by smoke detectors inside the residence.

Five people and several pets had made it out of the home by the time crews arrived at the scene.

Christian said the blaze was confined to the front porch area of the residence, and that most of the damage appeared to be on the exterior of the single-story home.

“The homeowner was out front with a garden hose when we arrived,” Christian said. “We knocked down a little bit of fire, but it was pretty much contained by the time we got here.”

Topeka firefighters had the blaze under control by 4:26 a.m.

A Topeka Fire Department preliminary investigation indicated the cause of the blaze was undetermined, more likely than not associated with smoking material. The fire started near a flower pot on the front porch.

Kansas Gas Service, Westar Energy and American Medical Response ambulance were called to the scene.

According to the Shawnee County appraiser’s office, the home is owned by Curtis and Frances Cuffel. Its 2017 appraised value is $131,000.
