A handgun and several open containers of alcohol were found in a car that police found Tuesday morning in a central Topeka alley after its driver refused to stop for officers.
The incident began about 11:45 a.m. near S.W. 3rd and Polk when Topeka police bicycle officer Justin Long tried to stop a gray four-door Ford Taurus for a traffic violation.
Rather than pulling over, the car continued traveling south and west through neighborhoods. Officers said the car didn’t exceed 30 mph and stopped at stop signs, but refused orders to pull over.
Police officials said the officers weren’t allowed to initiate a pursuit of the vehicle but did follow it for several blocks.
Eventually, an officer in a patrol car tracked down the car after it had been parked in a stall behind apartments in the west alley of the 1300 block of S.W. Western.
Officers found several items in the car that were to be taken for evidence, including the containers of alcohol and the handgun.
No arrests had been reported as of Tuesday afternoon as officers continued to search for the driver.
