Downtown Jazz & Food Truck Festival to feature headliner The Hot 8 Brass Band

Jazz music and food trucks will combine Saturday for an event likely to draw thousands of people to downtown Topeka.

The Downtown Jazz & Food Truck Festival will be 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the 800 block of S. Kansas Avenue. The event is free, and people planning to attend are invited to bring lawn chairs for seating, according to a news release from Downtown Topeka Inc., which is presenting the festival alongside Visit Topeka and the Topeka Jazz Workshop.

The event features beer gardens and more than 20 food truck vendors from across the state while highlighting a free jazz concert that features national talent.

“The Downtown Jazz & Food Truck Festival has become a signature event because it makes for a relaxing evening under the stars with the Statehouse as the perfect backdrop, listening to high-caliber music, sampling diverse food from the food trucks and enjoying a night with friends and family,” said Michelle Stubblefield, director of marketing and membership at Downtown Topeka Inc. “It’s the perfect downtown experience.”

The Grammy-nominated Hot 8 Brass Band, which hails from New Orleans, will headline Saturday’s event. The band blends hip-hop, jazz and funk styles with traditional New Orleans brass sounds and has performed with artists including Lauryn Hill and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Local jazz street performers will kick off the festival. Regional talent Chris Hazelton’s Boogaloo 7, a seven-piece ensemble that focuses on funky, rhythmic soul-jazz that harks back to the late 1960s and early 1970s, will take the main stage later in the day. Since its establishment in 2013, the group has held a Friday night residency at the Green Lady Lounge at 18th and Grand in Kansas City, Mo.

More than 5,000 people attended last year’s Downtown Jazz & Food Truck Festival, topping attendance estimated at 5,000 from the event’s first year in 2015.
