Topeka’s First Congregational Church will premiere a documentary about Ichabod Washburn, “Ichabod Washburn – A New England Legacy in Kansas,” and his connection to Washburn University.
The film — produced by Peggy Clark, Washburn University photographer — will show at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at the church located at 1701 S.W. Collins. The film is being shown to honor the 219th anniversary of his birth.
Washburn, the early benefactor who helped save the university — then known as Lincoln College — was a New Englander who had an extraordinary effect on a city he never visited. He died from complications of a stroke, never having set foot on Kansas soil to visit the school.
The church’s worship service begins at 10:30 a.m. After the film, several church members who are also Washburn alums will blow out the candles on a birthday cake for Washburn. Visitors are welcome.
