Funeral services will be held Saturday morning for a Wamego firefighter who died earlier this week after falling while on duty.

Services for John Randle, 68, are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Wamego Middle School, 1701 Kaw Valley Road, in Wamego. Burial will take place the following day at 2 p.m at Iuka Township Cemetery, N. 60th and Main Street, in Iuka in Pratt County.

Randle, a 14-year veteran of the Wamego Fire Department, was injured Monday when he fell from an apparatus and struck his head after returning from battling a blaze at a residence at 10985 Military Trail Road, about three miles southwest of Wamego. No injuries were reported in the blaze.

Upon returning to the Wamego fire station at 514 Plum, efforts began to return the apparatus to service, officials said.

While assisting with the efforts, Randle fell and struck his head, officials said. He was transported by Pottawatomie County Emergency Medical Services to the Wamego Health Center helipad, then was air-lifted to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, where he died Tuesday.

The Wamego Fire Department “has been overwhelmed by the response of the community, local, and area fire departments, who have gone above and beyond to assist all those affected by this tragedy,” officials said.

Members of various local jurisdictions are assisting with manning the Wamego Fire Department. Officials said Wamego Fire Chief Phil Stultz made this request so that Wamego firefighters can “have a chance to grieve their fallen brother.”

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Wamego Firefighter Auxiliary and left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box 48, 66547.

Any honor guards wishing or willing to participate in services for Randle can contact Adam Rothgeb at (503) 568-5107 or email adamrothgeb@yahoo.com. Also, the Wamego Fire Department asks that any emergency services bringing any emergency vehicles to contact Laramie McPherson at (785) 969-0741 or ksff255@gmail.com.
