Lyon County sheriff’s deputies found a body in a burning vehicle when they responded to a fire on Wednesday morning, a statement issued Thursday by the sheriff’s department said.
Information about the person’s identify, age or gender and whether the death was an accident, a homicide or a suicide hadn’t been made public by 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Deputies were sent to an L-shaped intersection at Road 160 and Road T, which is 5 miles east of Emporia, and 1.5 miles south of Interstate 35. The intersection also is just southwest of the Neosho River.
Deputies were dispatched to the site about 10 a.m. Thursday after a “suspicious vehicle” was reported in the area, the sheriff”s department statement said.
Deputies located the vehicle, which had a body in it.
The sheriff’s office is being assisted by the Emporia Fire Department, Emporia Police Department, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as Lyon County coroner Erik Mitchell.
