Railroad employees find man who eluded Shawnee County deputies after pursuit, search

Official says suspect needed water, minor medical assistance when found

Authorities on Saturday located a man they say fled from Shawnee County sheriff’s deputies Friday and escaped detection during an extensive search.

Sgt. Michael Wright said deputies were dispatched to the railroad tracks west of the 200 block of S.W. Urish Road, where Union Pacific railroad employees were helping a man identified as Patrick Atchison, 43. Atchison appeared to need water and minor medical assistance, Wright said in a news release.

Deputies identified Atchison as one of two people who led them on a pursuit that began about 4:15 p.m. Friday and ended on S.W. West Union Road, Wright said.

Late Friday, the sheriff’s office said deputies had tried to stop a stolen black 2003 Ford pickup truck on US-75 highway at its junction with Interstate 70. The driver continued west on I-70 to N.W. Valencia Road, then drove along several gravel roads before abandoning the truck in the 300 block of N.W. West Union Road.

The driver and passenger eluded authorities during a search that involved canine units and a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter.

Wright said Atchison was treated by firefighters and American Medical Response personnel at the scene, then taken to the Shawnee County Jail. He was booked in connection with possession of stolen property, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, driving with a revoked license and not having vehicle liability insurance.

On Friday, the sheriff’s office identified the truck’s passenger as a woman wearing a black T-shirt and a black and white skirt. She has been identified but hasn’t been located, Wright said Saturday.
