Emporia man identified as homicide victim found in burning car

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday identified a body found last week in a burning car as 19-year-old Jesus Avila-Galvin Jr.


Deputies found the Emporia man and the burning vehicle Sept. 6 on rural road south of Interstate 35. The death is being investigated as a homicide, Sheriff Jeffery Cope said in an email.

Just before 10 a.m. on Sept. 6, deputies were dispatched to a “suspicious vehicle” in the area. When they arrived at the L-shaped intersection of Road 160 and Road T, they found the car unattended on fire. Avila-Galvin was pronounced dead on the scene.

The area is 5 miles east of Emporia, just southwest of a a bend in the Neosho River.

The Emporia police and fire departments along with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the state fire marshal’s office are assisting with the investigation. Personnel from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have also assisted.
