Topeka Civic Theatre announces change to 2017-18 season, adding Broadway hits “Mamma Mia!” and “Newsies the Musical” to its lineup

After an earlier announcement of its 2017-2018 season, The Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy announced Friday it would be revising the schedule due to two additions approved by Music Theatre International to be performed at community theater level.

The company extended TCT the opportunity to present “Newsies the Musical” and “Mamma Mia!” with the first, “Mamma Mia!” slated for a March debut.

“Topeka Civic Theatre is very proud of the exceptional quality productions on all our stages,” said Jeri Hansen, board chair of the Topeka Civic Theatre board of trustees. “We credit much of our success and our reputation with national royalty companies to our dedicated and talented volunteers. It’s this reputation that inspired Music Theatre International to offer Topeka Civic Theatre these exiting titles before they are officially released for all community theatres.”

In addition to “Newsies” and “Mamma Mia!,” TCT will also present “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” earlier than expected. This makes all three musicals in TCT’s 82nd season brand new off the Broadway stage.

On the Music Theatre International website, the organization stated that “Mamma Mia” is currently available to very limited international and professional theatre organizations. The general release is expected for fall 2018.

“For years our patrons have expressed their desire for us to produce “Mamma Mia!” said Vickie Brokke, CEO and president of the Topeka Civic Theatre. “We are thrilled to share this much-desired production with our patrons, volunteers and greater community.”

Brokke said one of the reasons TCT was fortunate enough to be selected for these titles was its longstanding relationship with MTI, and its reputation as a quality theater.

Other theaters across the nation also benefit from these opportunities, they just receive access to the materials at different times. To TCT’s knowledge, Brokke said, the only other Kansas theater to be invited to do “Mamma Mia!” was Salina Community Theatre, which will present the show from June 8 to July 1.

Both productions at TCT will be produced by Shannon Reilly, the theater’s artistic director.

“We are extremely thrilled, honored and terribly excited,” Reilly said. “Our 82nd season is bigger and brighter than ever.”

“Mamma Mia!” will be performed March 2 through March 31, and “Newsies the Musical” will take place from July 13 to Aug. 12, 2018.
