Savanna Maue: Lawrence’s restaurant week approaches, Topeka restaurant scene sees flurry of changes with the new year

Hey all —

It’s been a flurry of restaurant news this week! I suppose with the new year, restaurants have decided to make some changes to accompany the new calendar.

Some have been temporary, like the Oriental Pearl and The Burger Stand’s remodels, but others are closing for good, like Bruno’s Downtown Grill and Bar.

However, there’s been some positive restaurant news in the works as well — as you might have seen last week, Baker’s Dozen opened its third location in Thunderbird Square shopping center at S.E. 29th and Croco, which was met with a lot of excitement for those living east of Lake Shawnee.

A lot of commotion continues to surround upcoming businesses, like Supermart El Torito in North Topeka, and whatever happened to the proposed Little Caesars Pizza in Fairlawn Plaza — and I promise, I am working on those updates! With so much happening, it’s difficult to keep it all straight.

The last point I wanted to touch on is the beginning of Lawrence’s Restaurant Week! From Jan. 19-27, restaurants all across Lawrence add new specials to their menus, offer exclusive dining options or even extend their hours for the week dedicated to celebrating all things food.

Full details are available at, but if you’re in the mood to try something a little different for your weekly night out — be sure to check one of the featured restaurants off your bucket list.
