Savanna Maue: Local pizzeria, coffee shop make steps toward opening

Hey all —

This week I have two local restaurant updates.

Joseph Bullock, the owner of Pizzeria Via Family Dining, 738 S.W. Gage Blvd., gave me a call this week to update me on his progress. Bullock has faced about every challenge you can when it comes to renovating a restaurant, but said this most current obstacle is the last hurdle they’ll (hopefully) face before opening.

Bullock found the fryer at the restaurant is not up to date, and needed modifying and a replacement hood before it could be used. This equipment is extremely expensive to modify, so Bullock said they decided to buy a self contained hooded fryer. Pizzeria Via couldv’e opened, technically, without the fryer, but Bullock said since so many of their appetizers require frying he didn’t want to open to the public with a limited menu.

The updates will be made mid to late January, so Bullock said they were looking at an opening date in late January to mid-February. Through all these challenges Bullock sounded optimistic last week, and said he can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The other update was from Jona Rupnicki at J&J Gallery Bar, 917 N. Kansas Ave. In late October, Rupnicki announced a coffee bar moving into the gallery space. Earlier this month, the owner made a Facebook announcement previewing “J&J’s Brew &Brew,” where they will serve gourmet coffee and craft beers in addition to their current drink menu.

Details are still being ironed out, Rupnicki said, but hopefully in January there will be a new option to get caffeinated in NOTO.
