Local sports briefs: Runners blanked by Bulls

The Topeka RoadRunners lost 4-0 on the road Friday night at Amarillo. The Bulls scored a goal in the first period and added three more in the second to pull away. Topeka was outshot 36-24. The two teams will play again at 7 p.m. Saturday.

WU VOLLEYBALL WINS 10TH STRAIGHT: The No. 13 Washburn volleyball team swept East Central 25-15, 25-9, 25-23 to open the Missouri Southern Invite on Friday in Joplin, Mo. WU (17-3) won its 10th straight match and was led in kills by Leanna Willer with 12 and Marissa Cox with 11. Sarah Vicory added five blocks, and Natalie Bates had a team-high 17 assists, while Kelsey Lewis dug 12.

CAPITALS TO MAKE DEBUT THIS WEEKEND: The Topeka Capitals hockey team will make its franchise debut this weekend, hosting the Dallas Jr. Stars at 7 p.m. Saturday in Landon Arena. The Capitals, a member of the North American Tier III Hockey League, will also host Dallas at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Admission to Capitals’ games is $5 and there is no charge for parking.

SPORTING KC’S VERMES INDUCTED INTO SOCCER HALL: Sporting Kansas City manager and former soccer player Peter Vermes was formally inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Friday at Sporting Park. The former MLS and United States men’s national team star forward joined Joe-Max Moore in being honored before the U.S. played Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier.

KU SOCCER SHUT OUT AGAIN: The Kansas soccer team was shut out by TCU on Friday in Lawrence 1-0 despite the Jayhawks outshooting the Horned Frogs 13-3 over the final 45 minutes of play. It was the third straight match without a goal for KU (5-7-2, 0-2-1). TCU’s Kelly Johnson headed the lone goal on a corner kick in the 18th minute of play.



RoadRunners take 6-2 loss vs. Wichita Falls
