Best Downtown Restaurant/Retail
Edward Moege is happy that he’s making a living doing what he loves — barbecue. Moege and his wife, Julia Moege, own and operate HHB BBQ, 906 S. Kansas Ave., known for its “smoked low and slow” meats and bountiful side dishes.
HHB BBQ opened in 2012 in a downtown building, which was destroyed by fire in January 2015. The restaurant reopened in June 2015 at its current location, which Edward Moege says is three times the size of its previous site.
While the food keeps people coming back, their customers also love the restaurant’s decor, which features brick-and-limestone walls, exposed duct work and chalkboard menus.
“It makes them feel good,” he said.
HHB BBQ, which is open weekdays, also offers catering. The Moeges plan to keep the restaurant open seven days a week once the nearby Cyrus Hotel opens next year.
“I’m looking forward to having the hotel,” he said. “We need more reasons for people to come downtown.”
