Topekan Kathy Schlotterbeck walked out of Topeka’s Best Buy, telling an employee at the door, “They fixed it” and gesturing with her computer tablet.

“The tablet wasn’t working, and I thought it was dead,” said Schlotterbeck, adding a Geek Squad employee stopped what he was doing and, within minutes, her tablet was operational.

In-depth knowledge, technical training and commitment to customer care make the difference at Geek Squad, said Best Buy general manager Rich Smith. Because the employees repair and install everything from appliances to home networks, the company supports the Geek Squad with excellent training.

“Geek Squad is a full-service vehicle for the company,” he said. “The benefit that we have over a lot of other businesses is we sell and carry most of the products that the customers have. It gives us the opportunity to take care of customers in ways that other businesses might not be able to.”

Richard Smith talks about Best Buy's Geek Squad, which was named Best Computer Sales/Service for 2017.

The Geek Squad doesn’t take its work lightly, which is reflected in the feedback Smith receives from appreciative customers.

“When people’s computers are shut down or technology shuts off, that can be a life-altering situation,” he said. “People can’t reach their family anymore. They can’t share information. They lose their personal data. It can be very disruptive to people’s lives.”

First runner-up: The Computer Store
